so happy to be strappy

27 Mar

I can’t look at a store front, magazine or blog without being bombarded with strappy heels for spring- but I don’t hate it one bit.  This extremely leg slimming style and overall flattering shape is perfect to pair with anything and everything from boyfriend jeans to skater skirts.  What’s even more fun is that with so little material, it’s easy to go bold with wild colors and patterns like metallic or neon without overdoing it.  Since the trend started taking over runways for spring, I fell in love- and have already scored a pair for myself in classic black, white and gold.  Glamour Magazine’s tip: the thicker the ankle band, the skinnier your ankle will look.

Elongate legs in shorts and heels- just make sure the higher the heel the longer the shorts!

baby where’d you get your body(suit) from?

14 Feb

Read it, weep, and hit the Stairmaster, bodysuits are taking over fashion nightlife faster than Kim and Kris’s divorce. The fashion world has finally caught up to style icons like Beyoncé and Rihanna, who have buttoned, zipped, and snapped their way on stage bearing LOTS of leg in itty-bitty (yes, this is right) bodysuits. Who didn’t drool when Beyoncé appeared at the Super Bowl in a black, detailed and glammed version of her favorite beloved style? And let’s not even get into the serious girl crush nearly everyone under age 28 has on Rihanna.

Alright so you’re not actually going to go out looking like you just stepped off the set of the “Single Ladies” video shoot (or you are at least advised not to). This being said, bodysuits can be used as a tool add a little glam and a lot of Cat Woman-inspired sexiness to an outfit. Pair a bodysuit with skinny jeans, slim fitting pants, or a cute skirt for a night out at a club or bar.

Retail stores like Urban Outfitters and American Apparel feature a variety of styles and colors including long-sleeved, short-sleeved, halter, backless, partial mesh and complete mesh (not recommended, for hopefully obvious reasons). For those fortunate enough, cleavage-revealing bodysuits with mesh lining are especially popular and flattering.  For the rest of us lacking in that particular department, backless or styles with mesh on the sides are the way to go.

Some things to remember when endeavoring to wear a bodysuit successfully:

  1. They require bottoms. Don’t even try to pull a J. Lo and walk out of your dorm without at least donning a skirt
  2. If it zips or snaps, make sure it is secure. Needless to say you don’t want anything coming undone while you drop it low on the dance floor.
  3. Wear heels! This is a look that is fun and bold, so you might as well own it and rock a pair of heels at the same time.
  4. You probably need a special bra. Because a lot of these styles are mesh or low-backed, you’ll likely need to invest in an awkward chicken-cutlet looking sticky bra. Your outfit will thank you later.

There are a ton of styles and ways to wear a bodysuit, so mixing, matching, and adding your own unique flare is essential in making this look work for you. Here are some of my personal favorites:

chambray showers

3 Dec

If only we could time warp back to 2007 when life was supremely simpler and wearing just one layer of clothes was the accepted norm. It was a time when a sweater and jeans were proper winter attire and Demi and Ashton defied the sky rocketing Hollywood divorce rate. Jump forward five years to 2012, where winter fashion means donning approximately fifteen sweltering layers and Ashton is just as hated for his infidelity as Chris Brown is for beating Rihanna.

It’s true, who can deny a look that allows us to eat as much of the leftover pumpkin pie and caramel turtles as we want with no indication that there’s a fully formed food baby kicking beneath the depths of clothes? It’s only until you realize each layer acts like a personal heated blanket trapping sweat beneath your Kensie oversized sweater that you begin to rethink the value of layers (and how much you actually need to go to the class that’s conveniently on the opposite side of campus).

Enter the chambray shirt, more commonly known as God’s gift to fashionistas everywhere. Lightweight and virtually impossible to screw up, this jean material top can be thrown on as an under, over, or in-between layer. Colors can range from light to dark wash, ombre, or patterned, and often have stylistic buttons or snaps down the front. Others come studded or with sequins, depending on how versatile and unique you want the look to be.

Chambray can be easily paired with patterns of all kinds, and flawlessly accents knit sweaters to add a preppy feel to any outfit. Layers do look awesome with this shirt, but don’t try and overkill it by throwing on everything in your closet. It can also stand alone as a more polished piece when buttoned and paired with black pants or colored jeans. Add chunky jewelry or an infinity scarf for dimension and color.

Still questioning the magical powers of the chambray shirt? Check out the looks below for a little inspiration.

eternal coziness

28 Nov

Practicality and trendiness collide this season in the chic warmth of the infinity scarf.  The winter wear that made its mainstream debut last year is back and stronger than before in even more colors, textures, fabrics and lengths.  The scarf pairs well with everything from classic peacoats and edgy leather jackets for outdoor use, or can stand alone with any top as the snuggliest necklace you’ve ever experienced.

Infinity scarves are especially great for perfecting the art of stylish layering, a challenge to even the most fashionable of women.  They can be draped over just about anything to add dimension and interest to any outfit… and did I mention they keep you warm? Because this winter weather staple has some serious edge on other outerwear when it comes to bundling.

Still need convincing?  Check out the street style of these chic celebs:

Jessica Szohr

  • The Gossip Girl star lets her neon scarf be the focus of an otherwise muted outfit.  To get Jessica’s look, pair a bright-colored scarf with a neutral outfit to let the hue really pop.

Kourtney Kardashian

  • Fan favorite among the members of the Reality TV royal family, Kourt K. bridges the gap between her preppy peacoat and edgy bag with a dark olive scarf.  This can be useful in balancing toning down more extreme trends, like Kourtney’s studded leather hobo.

Jessica Alba

  • Jess’s gray colored infinity scarf looks effortlessly layered and styled.  Paired with lace up military boots and black accessories, this outfit oozes a trendy but laid back vibe.

Zoe Saldana

  • Zoe’s scarf relaxes her structured blazer and heels, without making the look any less formal or chic.  By not letting her scarf overwhelm her collar, it works more as an accessory than outerwear.

To snatch your own, check out H&M, Asos, and Nasty Gal.

pile on the peplum

8 Nov

This week’s must have works worship-able miracles: hiding muffin tops, disguising food babies, and enhancing the smallest part of your waist. Say farewell to the spandex you have depended on for so long (or throw them in the back of your drawer for bar nights with tight dresses) and hello to peplums.

Fitted on top and flaring into loose paneling at the waist, peplums provide a shape that is figure flattering and can be easily paired with skirts and pants. Fear not, for awkward lumps and bumps will be completely hidden by the hourglass shape. So step out of the spandex, finish the last of the Halloween candy and bow down to the shrine of peplum attire that is sure to appear in every online shopping cart.

Peplum skirts and dresses are the perfect way to stay classy when going out. Polished and easy to wear, these pieces look amazing with chunky jewelry and heels. It’s time to make the upgrade from bandage skirts to cute, frilly peplums!

Break out the Amex and clear your schedule for some online or real life shopping. Peplums are hitting the fashion world almost as hard as hurricane Sandy hit the northeast. Here is some inspiration to get you started:

leather, rinse, repeat

18 Oct

No, you read the title right. It said leather, yes, leather. Leave your poodle skirts behind and start rehearsing the lyrics to “We Go Together,” this week’s must have will transform any sweet and average Sandy into the iconic smoke show we cannot help but drool over at the end of Grease. Biker-chicks of the world rejoice, for leather is the cold weather trend taking a stand this fall, and you don’t need to be tatted up to your helmet hair to pull it off.

Sure we may have been skeptical in the past, but who’s to blame when the few visuals we have of leather-wearing individuals include Hell’s Angels and token guidos? Unless you are an official mobster or currently dedicating your life to fitting into that cat woman costume (more power to you!), head to toe leather is unnecessary, and should be avoided at all costs. Moral of the story: stay classy my friends.

Leather is not only practical, it’s hot! (Literally). In the wind tunnel also known as Storrs, Connecticut, we will do just about anything to shelter ourselves from the cold. This look is not only fashionable, it’s practical! Seriously, what more of an excuse do we need to go shopping?

Here are a few looks to get you started:

Leather piece number one: jacket. When buying a leather jacket, be sure to look for cool zippers and pockets, which only enhance the edginess of this already edgy attire. This can be easily paired with dresses, jeans, and skirts and come in a variety of colors. Extra points go to anyone bold enough to buy a leather jacket with studs. Rihanna will be so proud.

To go even bolder, I bring you leather pants! The tricky part about this look is to be tasteful. Leather pants must be skinny, but not so skinny that you can barely walk in them. Wear these with chunky, simple sweaters and lots of layers for a more casual vibe.

Leather shorts are perfect for nights out at school! High waisted or regular fit, shorts look great over sheer tights and paired with loose shirts. Just make sure your cheeks are covered!

Happy shopping!

halloweekend inspiration

16 Oct

In the upcoming week, college girls across the nation will be faced with an extraordinary predicament.  No, it is not the inevitable yet dreaded midterm season that boosts stress levels through the roof.  Nor is it parents’ weekend, when mom and dad get the prime opportunity to mortify their offspring by piling every single “food” item in the dining hall high on a plastic tray while sporting a broad grin and gaudy fan wear.  While these events are less than pleasing, the situation I am discussing is far more taxing on the collegiate’s psyche.

“What the eff am I going to be for halloween?”

Correction: halloweekend, the name given to the entire weekend devoted to dressing up in frivolous get-ups and hitting up all the right costume parties.  For her whole life, the college girl has been preparing for this event each October 31 when she dressed up to go trick-or-treating.  But now the stakes have been raised.  Long gone are the days of throwing on a cape and a witch’s hat.  A collegiate’s costume should be sexy, but not slutty. It should be creative, but not warrant “who invited the freak” looks ahem Cady Heron.  And it will be seen in the hundreds of pictures and selfies guaranteed to be taken that night and documented for eternity on Facebook.

And this year, as Halloween is on a Wednesday…. two halloweekends in a row? What’s a girl to do.

Keep calm and costume on.

Below are costumes that are easy to create with pieces most girls already own, are super cute, and are far more original than the tired bunny and the dreaded cat.  In fact, no animal ears are involved at all.

Rihanna

  • No surprises that this is my first idea… I can’t get enough of this girl. Shine bright like a diamond on halloweekend by channeling Riri’s edgy bad girl vibe while letting that Caribbean color shine through.
  • bustier top: $116 shoplesnouvelles.com; skirt: £27.00 H&M UK; denim vest: $250 etsy.com; boots: $150 Steve Madden

Madonna

  • The music legend’s “Like A Virgin” look is a classic for 80’s themed occasions, so why not take it out on halloweekend? It’s equal parts rebellious and fun, which makes it ideal for a costume party. The key to pulling it off is in the accessories: the more pearls, crosses, and lace the better.
  • corset: $32 republic.co.uk; skirt: Balmain, price upon request at Bergdorf Goodman, NYC; cross earings: $12 sheinside.com; cross necklace: $8.50 pacsun.com

Amurica!

  • Let’s face it: red, white and blue is somehow extremely flattering (props to Betsy Ross) and you will undoubtedly be the most popular girl at any frat party you go to.  Boys love ‘murica, and so do I, so let’s rock it like it’s Independence Day.
  • shorts: $60 etsy.com; boots: $30 myhotshoes.com; tank: $3 teeshirtpalace.com

Cher Horowitz

  • “Okay, so you’re probably going, “Is this like a Noxzema commercial or what?” But seriously, I actually have a way normal life for a teenage girl.”  When it comes to Cher I am speechless- she is the quintessential betch (made official by betcheslovethis.com).  Anyone worth talking to will recognize this costume.
  • dress: $18 Wet Seal; heels: $720 farfetch.com; boa: $6 halloweencostumes.com

Hella Hipster

  • If you can’t beat em, join em: dress head to toe hipster without the judgement for this weekend only.  It’s a cute, laid back and comfortable costume that is incredibly easy to piece together.  Mustache is a must.
  • shirt: $48 ustrendy.com; shorts: $64 topshop.com; tights: $20 Zara; necklace: $11 pacsun.com

Happy Halloweekend!
